From Fragmented Layout to a Light-Filled Gathering Space
It’s hard to imagine this kitchen’s starting point—pegboard backsplash, the dishwasher located in a separate room, limited square footage, and a layout that doubled as the main walkway to the backyard. Add in minimal natural light, and the space felt disconnected, inefficient, and underutilized.
By removing two major walls, we completely reimagined how this home functions. What was once an undefined middle room became an integral part of the kitchen—unlocking space, light, and flow that the home was always capable of.
Designed for Connection and Flow
This renovation wasn’t just about updating a kitchen—it transformed how the family lives.
- The new open layout allows for conversation with the cook, keeping everyone connected
- Natural light now fills the space, eliminating the need for artificial lighting throughout the day
- Meal prep is fully contained within the kitchen, no longer requiring movement between rooms
- Clear, intentional walkways make transitioning to the backyard seamless
What was once a pass-through space is now a destination.

Built for Openness and Longevity
Creating an open floor plan required more than just removing walls—it required proper structural support to carry loads and ensure long-term stability, allowing the space to open safely and seamlessly.
To unify the home, new hardwood flooring was installed throughout and carefully integrated with the existing structure. The subfloor was leveled to eliminate inconsistencies, creating a smooth, continuous surface that visually and physically connects each area. These foundational upgrades ensure the space not only looks cohesive, but performs that way as well.
Function-Driven Design
Every element was planned to support real, everyday use:
- Ample countertop space allows for easy meal prep, with quartz countertops installed for ever-lasting durability
- A dedicated tall pantry eliminates constant trips to the basement
- A separate dry zone houses a charging station and organized drop area for mail and devices
- A dedicated coffee station sits just outside the main work zone to reduce congestion
- Minimal open shelving provides both function and warmth—perfect for accessible storage and even growing fresh herbs
Each zone was designed to work independently while contributing to a cohesive whole.
An Eclectic, Welcoming Aesthetic
The design blends warmth, personality, and playfulness through a mix of bright colors, layered textures, and expressive patterns—all grounded with a sense of balance and elegance. The result is a kitchen that feels collected, inviting, and uniquely reflective of the family who lives there.
A Kitchen That Changed Everything
This home has always had an open-door policy—but now the space finally supports it. Entertaining feels effortless, daily routines feel natural, and the kitchen has become the true heart of the home.
Open floor plans don’t work everywhere—but in this home, it felt inevitable. Once the walls came down, the natural flow finally made sense.
